Anniston, Alabama1936 photograph by Peter Sekaer

Sekear emerged as an artist in the company of Walker Evans and Berenice Abbott. His photographic work combines dispassionate images and subjects with his concern for and intuitive grasp of the human condition. He saw his role not so much as that of a artist/reformer, but rather that of an artist/anthropologist.

What are ways students can use the photographs from the Sekear exhibit as a launching point for their own discussions and creations? If they were going to try to capture the human condition as they see it today, what images would they use as their subjects. What statements and actions might they hope their art would raise from the public who view their work?
